Yoga: 6 poses for releasing sinus pressure!
By Kimberly Kalfas, ND
Spring is a time of a lot of sinus aggravation due to changes in weather, the reawakening of mold spores and pollen into the spring air, heavy winter eating, and lack of movement for many as they slumbered in their dens. Sinus pressure is not only related to generalized face and neck pain, as well as breathing discomfort, but it also adds pressure to the bones in the head, leading to less than optimal flow of blood, lymph, cerebrospinal fluid, and secretions from inside the sinus cavity.
Antibiotics are often given for sinus pressure due to misdiagnosis as "sinus infection', however, many patterns of pressure are not of bacterial origin. Moreover, our first principle of do no harm is broken, if we treat with broad spectrum antibiotics that not only cannot get to the so-called infection, they also kill off much of the good bacteria in the gut that we need to keep in overall balance. Naturopathic Doctors use many therapies to treat sinus issues including diet and supplements, physical techniques, and more. We understand how other therapies such as craniosacral therapy or yoga can ease the transition into Spring and through the allergy seasons.
Here I found 6 yoga poses that can help to open flow in your sinuses to allow proper drainage:
- Standing forward bend
- Downward facing dog
- Plow Pose
- Bridge Pose
- Seated Forward Bend
- Supported Head Stand
If Yoga is not your thing, then try gentle stretches after a bath and in the morning when you jump out of bed. Anything that can open the fascia system (connective tissue), lengthen body tissues, and open channels will help your sinuses to drain properly and relieve pressure in a closed cavity.
