What is Craniosacral Therapy?
By Kimberly Kalfas, ND
Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a therapy that uses light touch to gently manipulate the bones of the skull (Cranium) and Tailbone (Sacrum) in order to treat many conditions and to enhance overall body function. There are many techniques of bone manipulation such as chiropractic, osteopathic, or naturopathic manipulation. Craniosacral Therapy is a more subtle form of cranial manipulation and can tune into deeper imbalances in the body, thereby focusing on individual patient and the uniqueness of each presentation of imbalances. Like more directive techniques, Craniosacral therapists utilize anatomical landmarks to place hands on body and feel restrictions in movement of bones and soft tissue. Most human beings can feel their cardiac rhythm from our internal pacemaker beating from 60-80 times per minute. We breathe 12-18 times per minute when we are at rest. Sometimes referred to as the "third rhythm", there is another dynamic wavelike rhythm that is due to movement of the cerebrospinal fluid as it is filtered from the bloodstream into the spinal column. This rhythm has been felt from 6-10 pulses per minute. As the pressure increases and decreases, there is a movement of the cranial bones and sacral bones. Like a drop of rain in water this creates a subtle ripple effect throughout the entire body. This ripple effect works through the body via the system of connective tissue known as fascia. Fascia has been described as a "3-D body stocking or a union suit with a place for everything in it" in Emotional Anatomy. In general, this dynamic fluid filled tissue connects you from head to toe, literally. That includes the covering of all bones, muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Can you imagine also, that this amazing fascia that holds you together like an alive plastic wrap, also connects all organs in that movement. From the top of your skull where your brain is housed, to the tip of your toes, this system is moving.
Craniosacral Therapy has been useful in treating all kinds of issues for exactly this reason. Injuries, traumas, inflexibility, dysfunctions in any of the systems (like neurological, endocrine, etc.) can create restrictions in the movement of the entire fascia system, the flow of Cerebrospinal fluid, and even the blood flow to the brain. Tuning into these restrictions can release stuck patterns, and allow flow to occur in bones, organs, and more that have been essentially cut off from the rest of the system. It would not be worth it to mention all of the conditions treated by CST, as it is so unique to the individuals restrictive patterns, based on their history from birth to present. In general, many illnesses that reoccur, are unexplainable, or are untreatable by current medical strategies can be treated by CST. Moreover, painful conditions and patterns in the body can often be due to the body memory of such traumatic events such as car accidents, falls, abuse and more can be aided to unfold and release the body memory in an instant. Going deeper, many stuck body patterns can lead to stuck emotional patterns and vice versa. CST is a therapy in total for the entirety of the system of the body, mind, and spirit. It is my opinion that each and every person could benefit from Craniosacral Therapy, as we all have our own imbalances that need help to be release, and our body is intelligent and with a little encouragement, will heal.
